Orbbec Contributes to China’s First National Standard for Optical 3D Measurement Systems

Share

Shenzhen, China – July 2025 – Orbbec, a leading provider of robotics and AI vision, has contributed as a drafting organization to China’s newly released national standard GB/T 16857.13-2025, titled Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) — Acceptance and Reverification Tests for Coordinate Measuring Systems — Part 13: Optical 3D CMS. The standard was officially approved by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation and Standardization Administration on May 30, 2025, and will take effect on September 1, 2025.

This marks China’s first national standard specifically designed for optical 3D coordinate measurement system testing, addressing a significant gap in technical specifications for the field. The standard provides unified acceptance and reverification guidelines for high-precision measurement equipment including structured light scanners and optical trackers.

Addressing Industry Challenges with Unified Measurement Criteria

The optical 3D coordinate measurement industry has long lacked unified acceptance and reverification standards. Companies previously relied on proprietary standards or international specifications, leading to inconsistent performance evaluation systems and limited data interoperability between manufacturers. This technical gap has constrained reliability improvements in high-end equipment, particularly for precision components in aerospace engines and high-speed train axles.

The new standard systematically regulates testing procedures for optical 3D coordinate measurement systems, covering core technical indicators including probing error, distortion characteristics, and spatial stitching accuracy. The standard adopts international standard ISO 10360-13:2021, with localized adjustments to meet domestic needs—bringing China’s practices into alignment with global norms.

For manufacturers, the standard ensures consistency and traceability in system performance. For end users, it offers a common reference for comparing devices across different brands, reducing cost and risk in equipment procurement.

Orbbec’s optical 3D coordinate measurement systems have been widely adopted in high-precision industries such as automotive manufacturing, providing strong technical validation for its contributions to national standardization efforts.

Strong Technical Foundation

Orbbec’s participation in this standard is built on more than a decade of deep expertise in high-precision optical measurement. Since its founding in 2013, the company has developed full-stack capabilities across six major 3D vision technologies, including structured light, time-of-flight (ToF), stereo vision, and LiDAR. Its solutions are widely used and validated in demanding environments such as automotive manufacturing.

With over 1,000 authorized patents—more than 40% of which are invention patents—Orbbec ranks among the top global innovators in 3D sensing. By contributing to the establishment of standardized testing procedures, Orbbec is not only advancing its own technological leadership, but also helping to shape the future of measurement standards across the industry.
