Cogvis is making the lives of the elderly easier and safer

Cogvis GmbH was founded in 2007 as a spin-off company from the Vienna University of Technology to build solutions for analyzing content in images, videos and 3D data based on many years of research in the fields of computer vision, machine/deep learning, artificial intelligence and 3D data processing. Cogvis collaborates regularly with respected research institutions and leading industrial companies in Germany and abroad, such as the Technical University of Vienna, ETH Zurich and the Toyota Motor Corporation.

Challenges

Annually, an estimated 3 million elderly people are treated in emergency rooms for injuries sustained by falls. One-in-five falls causes serious injuries such as broken bones or concussions.

  • Over 800,000 of these patients have to be hospitalized due to injuries sustained by falls. These falls can often lead to a serious head trauma or hip fracture.
  • Each year, at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures.

In 2015, the total medical costs for falls totaled more than $50 billion. Medicare and Medicaid shouldered 75% of these costs.

Solution Delivered

Guided by Orbbec Astra Series, their product CogvisAI, has been available for nursing homes and hospitals since 2018.  Via ‘Automated Fall Prevention & Detection,’ movements are analyzed in order to sound an alarm in the event of a critical situation or fall. Using Structured light technology, Orbbec Astra Series can perceive objects and people that are in the path of the projected infrared pattern.

The system can effectively prevent falls through timely alarms of nursing staff when people with a high risk of falling are raising up, sitting up, or standing up. In addition, the lights can be switched on automatically to reduce the risk of falling,” explains Planinc.

We are excited to partner with Orbbec. The combination of Orbbec’s 3D sensors with the unique cogvisAI enables us to provide training, prevention within one single device. We are therefore looking forward to continue working together with Orbbec to drive our innovations even better.
