One of Japan’s Top-3 Automakers Ventures into Robotics with Orbbec 3D Vision

To address the widespread challenges of medical staff shortages and low in-hospital logistics efficiency, one of Japan’s top three automakers has ventured into robotics and developed an autonomous hospital logistics robot equipped with Orbbec’s Gemini 2 stereo 3D camera.

At a hospital in Japan, the robot operates continuously, navigating corridors and patient rooms to perform daily deliveries of medications and medical supplies. As a trusted “new colleague” on the healthcare team, it completes over 100 delivery tasks per day, significantly easing the burden on medical staff and enhancing the hospital’s operational efficiency—freeing doctors and nurses from time-consuming, repetitive tasks so they can focus more fully on patient care and critical medical responsibilities.

Gemini 2 is a stereo 3D camera powered by Orbbec’s custom-designed depth engine chip. Serving as the robot’s “eyes,” it allows the robot to “see” the entire hospital environment — performing precise spatial measurements, recognizing paths, and detecting obstacles. While doctors and nurses steal moments of rest between emergencies, the “new colleague” tirelessly continues its rounds, deftly maneuvering in the hushed corridors and adjusting its path when an emergency team rushes past.

● Steady Steps, Smarter Care
Powered by Gemini 2, the robot gains high-quality, wide-angle, and blind-spot-free environmental perception. With a detection range of up to 10 meters and a field of view exceeding 100°, it enables the robot to navigate complex hospital environments with clarity and ease. A built-in six-axis IMU delivers highly accurate linear acceleration and angular velocity data, greatly improving the robot’s stability and precision in navigation and positioning. From maneuvering through narrow, crowded corridors to entering busy elevators, the “new colleague” moves smoothly and safely. This balletic stability and precision prove indispensable in healthcare facilities from hospital wards to nursing homes.

● Clear Vision, Thoughtful Delivery
Gemini 2 features a hardware-level D2C (Depth to Color) function, enabling pixel-level spatial alignment between depth and color images across multiple resolutions. This advanced capability enhances recognition accuracy in complex, cluttered environments—allowing the robot to precisely identify the position, size, and distance of medicine racks, even in densely packed pharmacies. With this reliable visual support, the “new colleague” can perform medical transport tasks with greater efficiency and accuracy.

In addition, as a high-performance and versatile stereo 3D camera, Gemini 2 is not only well-suited for medical applications, but also widely applicable to a range of intelligent solutions—including robotic bin picking, mobile perception, 3D reconstruction, and dimensional measurement. As automation continues to transform workplaces, the Gemini 2 stands ready to serve as the critical visual foundation for the next generation of intelligent solutions.
