Step, Touch, Play: LavaVision Supercharges Motioncube with Orbbec Astra Cameras

LavaVision, a Polish company established in 2012, specialises in developing interactive technologies and games and is the creator of the Motioncube.io platform. By combining motion detection technology with Orbbec’s latest Astra and Gemini series RGB-Depth cameras, Motioncube delivers immersive and engaging experiences designed for education, entertainment, therapy, and public spaces.

Imagine students captivated by 3D learning adventures or kids playing games by simply stepping onto a projected floor. Whether it’s dancing, throwing balls, or drawing with infrared pens, the environment comes alive with movement. This is the power of LavaVision’s Motioncube platform—supercharged by Orbbec’s 3D technology.

Precision Technology for Real-Time Interactivity

The Astra series is Orbbec’s new-generation line of structured-light 3D cameras. One of its standout models, the Astra 2, is powered by Orbbec’s proprietary MX6600 ASIC, ensuring high accuracy, completeness, and stability of depth data output. The Astra 2 supports the spatial alignment of depth and color images at multiple resolutions and features integrated inertial sensors for pose tracking and camera movement detection.

These capabilities make Astra 2 exceptionally well-suited for gesture-based applications, immersive environments, and 3D scanning—and a perfect match for Motioncube’s dynamic use cases.

Seamless Integration with Motioncube Software

The Motioncube platform transforms nearly any space into an interactive playground using a PC, a projector, and the Orbbec Astra 2 camera.

With Astra 2, the Motioncube system can:
– Precisely track foot movement on the floor to trigger real-time reactions in the projected content (e.g., walking through virtual snow or jumping on targets).
– Detect ball impact on walls with high precision, supporting games like paintball or other multi-ball arcade challenges.
– Enable full-body interaction, ideal for dance, physical games, or exploration-based experiences.
– Recognise IR light from pens, allowing users to draw, paint, or control objects intuitively.
– Automatically calibrate the camera for efficient setup.
– Automatically detect game area to ensure precise interaction zones.

LavaVision states: “Orbbec sensors are our preferred solution for interactive installations, especially if you wish to combine various interactive experiences, like motion and IR pen-games”.
